Sindhutai Sapkal is known as the “Mother of Orphans’ ‘. She is an Indian social worker, social entrepreneur and social activist known for her work with orphans in India. In 2016, he received a PhD in Literature from the Institute of Technology. D.Ya. Patira. She won the Nari Shakti Puraskar Award in 2017. 

Early life and education:

Sindhutai Sapkar was born on November 14, 1948 in Wardha District, Maharashtra. She was born into a shepherd family. She was an unwanted child and her name was Chindi. (Ripped fabric.)

His father tried to teach Sindhutai against his mother’s wishes. Her father, Abhimanji, sent her to school on the pretext of tending cattle.

She used the “Baladi tree leaf” as a lithograph. Because my family’s financial situation could not afford to buy real salt. Although she passed her fourth criterion, she then had to drop out of school due to poverty, her family responsibilities, and early marriage. 

Marriage and First Works:

When she was 12, she married a 20-year-old man from the Warda district. She had a difficult life until her marriage, but she never lost hope. She fought the exploitation of local women collecting cow dung by the Forest Service and new landlords.

Moreover, it made his job even more difficult. At 20, she became the mother of three sons. Her husband beat her so badly that she died at the age of 20 when she was nine months pregnant. In this semi-conscious state she gave birth to a daughter, Mamta. To survive, she began begging on the streets and on train platforms.

She often spent the night in the cemetery to avoid being chosen by men. It was called a ghost because it was seen in the cemetery at night.

In her struggle for survival, she found herself in Chihardhara, Amravati District, Maharashtra. The tiger sanctuary scheme evacuated 84 tribal villages.

Sindhutai is determined to fight for the proper reintegration of the powerless tribal people. The Minister of Forestry recognized his efforts and subsequently took appropriate steps towards alternative resettlement.

Helplessly, she walked several kilometres to her mother, who refused to take her. She started begging for food on the train platform.

There she finds that there are many children who have been abandoned by her parents. She took them in and started asking them to feed them.

Though she is an orphan, she has decided to become a mother to all and to all who are before her. She then donated her daughter to the Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Foundation in Pune, but only to reduce the attachment between her daughter and her adopted children.

Later works of Sindhutai Sapkal:

She is affectionately called “Mai” (Mother) because she devoted her life to her orphans. She has raised over 1,050 orphans.

Now she has a large family consisting of her 207 sons-in-law, 36 daughters-in-law and her over 1,000 grandchildren. But she struggles for her next meal.

Many of her adopted children are college educated. She has received over 273 awards for her work.

Her husband returned at 80 with an apology and she adopted him as her own child. Upon visiting her ashram, she would proudly introduce him as her senior. As a person, she has no negative emotions and is a very strong inspiration. In 2010, a biographical film based on her true story was released in the Marathi film Mi Sindhutai Sapkal. The film was selected for its world premiere at the 54th London Film Festival.

She fought for the reconstruction of 84 villages. To do this, she met Chedilal Gupta, who was the Minister of Forestry.

He agreed with her opinion, and when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi arrived to start the Tiger Project, Sindhutai showed him a picture of a blind Adivasis. She told him that when cows and chickens were killed by wild animals, the Forest Service would pay compensation, but why humans weren’t being killed.

Moreover, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi immediately ordered reparations. When she became aware of the plight of the orphaned and orphaned Adivasi children, she took care of them.
