Ten years ago, when Raju Kendre, the son of farmer parents, went to study in Pune at the age of 18, he had no one to guide him and he continued to stay in the ‘big city’. I couldn’t think of anything financial. After 3 months, he returned to his village in Burdwan district, Maharashtra and switched from distance learning to distance learning. Alongside his studies, he worked in a non-governmental organisation in the Mergata region, where he not only learned to work at the local level, but also strengthened his determination to work for the tribal community. After completing his master’s degree at the Institute of Sociology (TISS) in Tata, Tuljapur, he moved to Yavatmar on a scholarship from the Prime Minister’s Office and started teaching at the university. So he started teaching his students in 2017. This is how his organisation Eklavya India, an initiative to promote higher education and provide leadership to first generation students, was born. “On the first day of class, I remember asking, ‘Where would you like to study programming?’ I gave them the names of local universities, and 90-95% of them raised their hands. Then I asked, “Have you heard of TISS or Azim Premji University (APU)?” And some hands went up. When I asked who wanted to go, no one raised their hands,” he said, pointing to the cultural and socioeconomic barriers students face.
In 2018, about 35 students from this class applied to TISS and APU. Kendre added that he often explains to his family that education is the “capital” of their children. If they want to succeed in life. The organisation has helped 300 students enter prestigious universities, and alumni often help lead subsequent groups. “He is determined to do something for the tribal community,” said Shri Krishnathil Party, assistant professor at TISS Rural Development School in Tuljapur, who has known Kendra since 2014. “He focuses on tribal areas because no one wants to go there and help them,” he says. What are Kendra’s long-term goals? To build an interdisciplinary institute in central India and provide opportunities for tribal people.
Meanwhile, 10 years later, Kendre has won a Chevening Scholarship in London, another of her metropolises where she continues to build her own educational capital to better help people.
