Meet Manoj Sharma, an IPS officer with an extraordinary journey that defies convention. His odyssey began in the heartland of India, Morena district in Madhya Pradesh. Manoj’s childhood aspiration was to become an IAS officer, but the path ahead was laden with obstacles, starting with his setback in the Class 12 examination. In fact, Manoj Sharma’s academic record was punctuated by a third division in both Classes 9 and 10, and a rather unexpected outcome in Class 12, where he excelled only in Hindi.

However, adversity did not dampen Manoj Sharma’s indomitable spirit; instead, it fueled his determination to realize his dream of becoming an IAS officer. The narrative takes an intriguing twist as Manoj authored a book aptly titled ‘Twelfth Fail,’ wherein he candidly recounts his journey. During his pursuit of education, he also navigated the rough terrain of life, literally driving a tempo to make ends meet. Financial destitution was so stark that his humble abode lacked even a proper roof.

In a poignant revelation, Manoj Sharma shared that, during this period, he found himself sharing the plight of beggars as he struggled to survive. His resilience led him to take up the role of a library peon in Delhi, where he voraciously read about luminaries ranging from Gorky and Abraham Lincoln to Muktbodh. The pages of his life story also unveil a poignant chapter, where he silently nurtured an unexpressed love during his Class 12 days—a love that he held back, haunted by the fear of unreciprocated affection.

Manoj Sharma’s saga of success in the UPSC examinations is a testament to his unwavering determination. It was not an easy journey, as he finally clinched victory in his fourth attempt, securing an impressive 121st rank. Subsequently, he donned the prestigious role of an IPS officer within the Maharashtra cadre in 2005, solidifying his triumphant ascent from adversity to achievement.
