Journey of an Auto Driver – Desraj Jyot Singh

Desraj Jyot Singh turned his car into a house to give his family a ‘real home’. He drove on his 35th birthday and lived “richly” for 24 years. why? He believes that renting a small room in Mumbai will cost him 2,000 to 3,000 rupees a month and that he can use this money to pay for his grandchildren’s education. Desraj had four children, three sons and one daughter. His eldest son died in 2016 and another son committed suicide at Karl’s station two years later. He didn’t have time to cry. He had to feed four members of his family. The next day he left home so that the money he earned would be distributed fairly amongst all his family members. Her youngest son worked as a security guard but lost his job during the pandemic. Desraj believes that his family’s financial situation will not allow him to take time off. Whatever money he earns, he keeps a portion of it for minimal personal spending and transfers the rest to his family. The story is that even after losing two sons, not having enough money to support his family, and having to convert his car into a house, Mr Desraj Jyot Singh did not lose his courage and continued raising his granddaughter. Soon he will be the first graduate in his family. Desraj said in an interview that his eldest son disappeared from the house six years before him. A week later, people found him dead in his car. He was only 40 years old. Part of me died with him, but he was so overwhelmed with his homework that he didn’t even have time to grieve – the next day he was out on the road again, driving my car.

Two years later, Desraj Jyot Singh youngest son committed suicide, leaving behind his daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. To support his family and educate his children, he worked hard, leaving home at 6 am and driving until midnight. He could only earn £10,000 to support his family and had to ask for money from time to time to buy medicine for his wife. But when his granddaughter got 80% on 12 boards, he said it was worth it. He was so happy that he gave all his customers a free ride that day. When her granddaughter wanted to complete her high school diploma in Delhi, Desraj moved her family to a relative’s house so she could sell her house and pay for her studies. “I couldn’t send her to another city, but she had to make her dream come true,” he says. So now Miss Desraj lives in her car. “It’s been a year since then, and honestly life isn’t that bad. “I can’t wait for her to be a teacher so I can hug her and tell her how proud I am of her,” he added.
