An alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Shishir’s journey is a testimony to his unwavering spirit. Despite facing immense challenges, including battling depression, he emerged victorious in the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services examination by securing the 50th All India Rank (AIR).
Considered one of the most grueling exams in India, UPSC Civil Services Exam consists of three phases, which require rigorous preparation and unwavering determination. With an annual influx of around 3-4 lakh candidates for prestigious posts such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other respected civil service roles, the competition is fierce.

Resilience Rewarded: Shishir Gupta Road to UPSC Rank 50
Shishir Gupta, a member of the 2020 AGMUT cadre, is currently serving as the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Ramnagar in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir. Hailing from the charming city of Jaipur, he completed his schooling before embarking on an academic journey at IIT-Bombay, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. After his graduation, he stepped into professional field and secured a lucrative position as Process Engineer at Bilfinger Tebodin. Where he devoted two years of his life from 2013 to 2015.
However, driven by an innate desire to serve the society and contribute meaningfully to the nation, Shishir Gupta took a courageous decision to quit his high paying job and dedicate himself to the preparation of Civil Services Examination. It was a leap of faith, a pursuit fueled by his unwavering determination to excel in the UPSC exam.
Yet, despite his relentless efforts, Shishir faced setbacks. After two unsuccessful attempts at cracking the UPSC exam, he found himself grappling with depression. His family’s support and encouragement gave him the strength to overcome obstacles and embark on a path of redemption. He was able to secure a remarkable All India Rank of 50 on the UPSC exam in 2019.
Shishir Gupta Journey To IAS
Shishir Gupta began his journey with the UPSC exam in 2016, which marked the beginning of his pursuit. Unfortunately, success eluded him on his first attempt. Undeterred, he made a valiant second endeavor in 2017, falling short by a mere six marks. The weight of these disappointments took a toll on his mental well-being, plunging him into a state of depression. He chose to persevere in his journey of preparation and growth, instead of succumbing to adversity. Ultimately, his unwavering determination and unyielding spirit led to his triumphant achievement of securing AIR Rank 50 in 2019.
